Shining Example
Layers of lighting are as important to designing a welcoming outdoor living space as they are to indoor spaces. So, because you could consist of recessed overhead lights, lamps and wall sconces in your living room, outdoors you can plan to decorate walls, landscaping components and even overhead. In this undertaking, landscape architect June Scott installed little directional lights in a massive tree to make what she calls a "moonlight" effect. Additional fixtures graze the walls, "creating shimmering patterns." She supplemented with candle lanterns around the perimeter -- an easy and affordable option that works in any space, no wiring needed.
Magic Lanterns
Decorative lanterns, classic or new, are among the easiest and most attractive approaches to add light to an outdoor room. Cluster them on the dining table, set them things around the borders of the space or line them up on a wall -- the options are many and diverse. You are able to use genuine wax candles or outside LED "candles." This battery-operated lantern comes with three flameless candles.
Fine Dining
There is nothing like a chandelier to make an elegant dining atmosphere. But wiring to get an outside fixture can be challenging, and wet-rated designs are somewhat restricted. One solution would be to hang a candle chandelier in the beams of a pergola or covered patio, as designer Howard Roberts did here. Use battery-operated LED "candles" for simple operation. Add string lights radiating from the chandelier's mounting to make a magical canopy of light over diners' heads.
Step Lightly
Lighting on steps and paths is a smart safety step -- and, fortunately, one that will not ask you to call an electrician. Only mount those solar deck lights to any flat surface with screws contained (or simply place them on the ground); they will control when the sun is outside during the day, and then turn on two LED bulbs at dusk.
Immediate Romance
"To make a warm, soft and intimate glow, I used pillar candles in a few spots on this front porch. The candlelight offers just the correct amount of lighting, not to remove in the breathtaking view of the sunset over the hillside vineyard," says designer Miyuki Yamaguchi. "Use battery-operated pillar candles -- they're a far safer option to relish from dusk until dawn," she adds.
Vintage Charmers
A series of twinkling lights will add a little something special to any outdoor space, but vintage-style lights with exposed filaments go the additional style mile. These Edison series lights add an enjoyable party attitude to decks and patios and look great wrapped around an outdoor umbrella.
Holding Court(lawn)
Overhead string lighting placed at fixed intervals across this verdant courtyard creates the illusion of a "roof" of lighting, but adds illumination without competing with all the starry skyscape. "We also used copper DSE uplights for the trees, shrubs and pottery," says landscape architect Warwick N. Hunt.
String Light Solution
Caf lights incorporate a gorgeous glow to an outside living space, but they might be complicated to hang if you don't have trees or other tall items to string them out of. This freestanding alternative for dangling lights uses planters and wood articles. It is totally temporary, so it's perfect for tenants.
Flower Power
Vessels for blossoms that are spectacular by day, lighting elements through the night: These solar illuminated planters are powered by sunlight, so it is possible to display them everywhere without worrying about outlet placement. Choose color-changing style or pick a single color to complement your plantings.
Work and Play
To get a multifunctional outdoor living room that would serve as a family gathering space and a meeting area for the owners' customers and coworkers, landscape architect Mark Tessier created an accordingly varied lighting scheme. Traditional exterior lighting illuminates the area without creating a statement, whilst design enters from above and below, via a flickering flame pit and paper lanterns of different sizes hung randomly through the space. "After dusk, these lights cast a warm, inviting glow merry for simple or elegant gatherings any time of the year," says Tessier.
Bright Thought
Lamps aren't only for inside. Electric table lamps approved for outside use are ideal ornamental accents that extend your outside moment. This indoor/outdoor lamp takes a routine 60 Watt bulb and comes with a cheery geometric shade.
Smart Solution
Landscape architect Mark S. Garff recalls his client's new terrace space was badly lit, just illuminated by means of a sconce beside front door. "By installing low-wattage overhead string lights, we inserted ambient light onto the ground plane that, as opposed to shining into eyes or creating hot spots, blankets the website with a warm, soft glow at night," he says.
Firefly Effect
Following is a fun project for children and grownups alike: Upcycle empty bottles to make solar garden lighting. This solar bottle lantern kit consists of a rubber stopper with three short LED light strings attached. Simply insert the mild strings into a jar of your choice and set the stopper in the top of the bottle. A small solar panel on the top protects the battery so that when dusk falls the twinkling LED lights begin to glow. Exhibit the weatherproof project anywhere you like, year round.
Reflect on This
In case you've got a pool or water feature in your outdoor living space, don't forget to use the reflective qualities of water at night. String lights, as exhibited here, rows of lanterns or stainless fittings across the edges of the pool will throw a subtle light that will appear to dancing round the mirrorlike surface.
Sleek Spotlights
Candles are not your only choice for impromptu outdoor illumination. If you want a more contemporary appearance, consider these saucer-shaped oil lamps. They are made of poly/resin/stone for a contemporary spin on midcentury terrazzo. Filled with mineral oil or citronella oil, the lamps will burn up to eight hours.
Safety Counts
Emphasize your deck railing, posts or stairs with these solar deck accent lights. They turn on automatically at dusk and include appealing amber-hued ambiance for approximately eight hours after a complete day of sunlight.
